this weekend i went to ohio to campaign for kerry. on the way back, we had a meaningful discussion about why the sky is blue.
radio: "one day we'll know if love can move a mountain, oneday we'll know why the sky is blue"
christine: megan hates this song because we already know why the sky is blue, and love cannot move a mountain.
me: well, yes we do know why the sky is blue, it has to do with light reflecting in the atmosphere. the sky is blue because the ocean is blue. but, do we know why the ocean is blue?
christine: well, it has to do with light and molecules.
me: well, obviously. but, if we took all of the water out of the ocean, put it in 12 oz. glasses that were perfectly clear, and put them back in the space where the ocean was before we took it and put it in glasses (next to and on top of each other) would it still be blue. you know, because the water in an individual glass isnt blue.
christine: well, why don't you try it out. pick a coast, and buy yourself some glasses.
(if this had been my other road trip from this summer, my other companion would have responded to my ridiculous scenario with some scientific response).
NB: brief examination proved me wrong. the sky is blue because of the length of blue light wave....it's the ocean that's blue because of reflection.
